The project focuses on a comprehensive approach to water management, beginning with the development of rigorous methodologies and information to support the formal designation of water bodies. A significant portion of this work involves the careful preparation and evaluation of data to identify candidates for Heavily Modified Water Bodies (HMWB) and to determine their relevant human uses. By deriving and describing specific case groups, the project establishes the necessary foundations for all subsequent formal designation steps.
Central to the mission is the definition of environmental targets, specifically the Maximum Ecological Potential (MEP) and the Good Ecological Potential (GEP) for various biological quality components. This process includes identifying the most sensitive biological components and analyzing data to describe the ideal habitat conditions and measures required to reach the highest potential. Furthermore, the team works to define the criteria for Good Ecological Potential, which involves determining necessary habitat conditions and describing the mitigation measures essential for success.
To ensure these theoretical frameworks translate into practical results, the project identifies key habitats and fish-relevant structures. This involves a detailed categorization and description of the habitat requirements for fish species native to Luxembourg, ensuring that ecological targets are grounded in the needs of local biodiversity. In addition to these broader methods, the project addresses unique challenges through individual case assessments for specific water bodies that require tailored ecological evaluations.
All methods and findings are meticulously documented to serve as a foundational background document for the 4th River Basin Management Plan (BWP)
